Most dental problems aren’t emergencies, but they still nag at you. A filling that feels rough, a cleaning you’ve put off for a year, a denture with a crack you keep feeling with your tongue. At Highland Kitchener Dentist on Highland Rd W, we offer same day dental appointments in Kitchener for exactly this kind of thing, so you can call in the morning and often be in the chair before the day is out. Call 519-885-1598 and we’ll check what’s open today.
What a same day appointment is for
Same day visits are for routine and non urgent care that you’d rather not leave on the calendar for weeks. Some examples of what people book with us on short notice:
- A checkup or exam, including one you’ve been meaning to book since you moved to the area
- A cleaning and exam before a wedding, a trip or a new job
- A small filling, or a look at a tooth that’s started to feel sensitive to cold or sweets
- A crown that feels loose or a filling with a chipped edge
- A denture that’s cracked, rubbing or doesn’t sit the way it used to
- A consultation about whitening, a chipped front tooth or treatment another dentist suggested
- A second look at something your hygienist mentioned last time
Small problems are also simpler to fix while they’re small. A chipped filling caught this week is usually a quick repair; the same filling left until it breaks can mean a crown. That’s the main reason we keep room in the schedule for short notice visits.
If you have strong pain, swelling, a knocked out tooth or bleeding that won’t stop, that’s an emergency rather than a same day booking. Tell us when you call and we’ll treat it that way, and see our emergency dentist page for first aid tips while you wait.
How to book a same day visit
Want to come in today? Call us at 519-885-1598 and tell us what you need.
The earlier in the day you phone, the better. Morning callers have the widest choice of times, and openings tend to fill as the day goes on. When you phone, it helps to tell us:
- What you’d like done, or what you’ve noticed
- If you’re a current patient or new to us
- Your insurance or Canadian Dental Care Plan details, if you have them
- When you can realistically get here, so we can match you to a time that works
You can also send a request through our contact page, and we’ll get back to you. For anything you want done today, though, a phone call is the quickest way.
If we can’t fit you in the same day, we’ll be honest about it and offer the nearest opening instead. Many people who live or work in west Kitchener find a lunchtime or end of day slot easiest, so mention that when you call. Keep in mind you may be numb for a few hours after a filling, which can make a lunchtime visit awkward if you have meetings in the afternoon.
What we can usually finish in one visit
A lot of everyday dentistry fits into a single appointment. On a same day visit we can often:
- Do an exam and any X-rays you’re due for, then go over the results with you
- Clean your teeth, if your gums are healthy and there isn’t heavy buildup
- Place a tooth coloured filling on a small cavity
- Smooth a sharp edge or repair a minor chip with bonding
- Recement a crown that has come loose, if the crown and tooth are both in good shape
- Adjust a denture that’s rubbing a sore spot
- Talk through options for larger work, so you leave with a plan
What usually needs a second appointment
Some treatments simply take more than one visit, and we’d rather tell you that at the start than surprise you.
- New crowns. We prepare the tooth and place a temporary crown, and the permanent one is fitted at a later visit. Our dental crowns page explains the steps.
- Bigger denture repairs. A small adjustment can be done in the chair. A cracked or broken denture may need more time, and we’ll tell you how long once we’ve seen it.
- Deep cleanings. If there’s a lot of buildup or signs of gum disease, cleaning is often split over two or more visits so it’s comfortable and thorough.
- Larger treatment plans. Root canals, implants, several fillings or cosmetic work are usually planned and booked after your first visit.
Even then, the same day visit is useful. You find out what’s going on, the immediate problem gets handled, and the rest is booked at a time that suits you.
Insurance, direct billing and CDCP
We bill most dental plans directly, so in most cases you only pay the portion your plan doesn’t cover, with some specialist work handled differently. Before we start anything, we’ll explain what’s recommended and the fees involved, and you can ask for an estimate to send to your insurer. For anything your plan doesn’t cover, we accept credit cards and cash.
No insurance? You’re still welcome. We’ll explain our fees before treatment starts and help you decide what to do now and what can wait. For larger work covered by a private plan, a predetermination before treatment avoids most surprises.
CDCP patients are welcome. If you have Canadian Dental Care Plan coverage, our team can go over how it applies to the visit you’re booking. The program’s rules and covered services can change, so please confirm the current details on canada.ca. Our CDCP page has a plain overview.
Convenient for west Kitchener
We’re at 140 Highland Rd W, Kitchener, a handy stop if you live in Westmount, Forest Heights, Highland Hills or near Belmont Village, or if you work nearby and want to come in on a break. We see young children, teens, adults and seniors, so a parent can sometimes book a child’s checkup the same day too. Just let us know who’s coming when you call.
Same day appointment FAQ
Do I have to be an existing patient?
No. New and existing patients can both call for same day times. If you’re new, arrive a few minutes early so we can go over your health history, and bring any recent X-rays or records you have.
Can my whole family come in together?
Sometimes, depending on what’s open that day. Back to back bookings are easier to arrange with a little notice, but it never hurts to ask.
Will the dentist do everything I need in one visit?
Often, for small things. For bigger work, we’ll handle the urgent part, explain the rest and book it in. You won’t be pushed into treatment on the spot.
What should I bring?
Your insurance card or plan details, a list of any medications you take, and your denture or broken piece of tooth if that’s what you’re coming in about. If you’ve had X-rays elsewhere in the past year or two, let us know so we can request them.
What if I wake up with severe pain or swelling?
That’s an emergency. Call us right away and say so, and go to the hospital if swelling is spreading or you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
