Crowns Caps - Highland Kitchener Dentist

A dental crown, often called a cap, fully covers a tooth, restoring it to its original shape and size. It strengthens and protects the tooth when fillings or other restorations are insufficient.

Porcelain crowns are popular for their durability and aesthetic appeal, designed to last many years. They mimic the shape, size, and colour of natural teeth, enhancing the beauty of your smile. However, like most dental restorations, they may require replacement over time.

Reasons for Dental Crowns:

  • Repairing broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancements.
  • Restoring decayed teeth.
  • Replacing fractured fillings.
  • Covering large fillings.
  • Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.

Procedure for Getting a Dental Crown:

The crown procedure typically involves two visits. The first appointment includes taking precise molds (or impressions) to create both the custom crown and a temporary crown. The temporary crown will protect the tooth for about two weeks while the permanent crown is being crafted in a dental lab.

During this visit, the dentist will numb the tooth, remove any decay, and shape it to fit the crown. The temporary crown is then placed with a temporary adhesive, and the dentist checks your bite to ensure proper alignment.

At the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown, clean the tooth, and fit the permanent crown, making sure it aligns correctly with your bite and spacing.

Following the procedure, you’ll receive care instructions and be encouraged to maintain regular dental check-ups to monitor the condition of your new crown.
