How nitrous oxide works

Nitrous oxide is a mild gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over your nose. It takes effect within a few minutes. You stay awake and can talk to us the whole time, but you’ll feel calmer and less bothered by the sounds and sensations of treatment.

What it feels like

• A relaxed, light or warm feeling
• Some people notice tingling in their hands or feet
• You remain aware and can respond to us
• When the mask comes off, the effect wears off within minutes

Nitrous oxide doesn’t replace freezing. We still freeze the area for procedures like fillings and extractions, and the gas helps you feel more at ease while we do it.
