Porcelain Inlays - Highland Kitchener Dentist

An inlay restoration is a customized filling crafted from composite materials, gold, or tooth-coloured porcelain. Porcelain inlays are favoured for their natural tooth-like appearance. Created in a professional dental laboratory, a porcelain inlay is permanently bonded into the tooth by your dentist.

Inlays offer a conservative solution for repairing teeth that are severely damaged by decay, trauma, or large defective fillings. They serve as an excellent alternative to traditional silver and composite fillings and are more conservative than crowns because they require the removal of less tooth structure.

Like most dental restorations, inlays are not permanent and may eventually need to be replaced. However, they are highly durable and can last for many years, providing a beautiful and long-lasting smile.

Reasons for inlay restorations include:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.

What does the inlay procedure involve?

Typically, the inlay process requires two appointments. During your first visit, your dentist will take several precise impressions (molds) to create your custom inlay and a temporary restoration.

While the affected tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials. The tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and shaped to ensure a proper fit for the inlay. A temporary filling will be placed to protect the tooth while the inlay is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

At your second visit, your new inlay will be carefully positioned and securely bonded into place. Minor adjustments may be necessary to ensure a comfortable fit and proper bite alignment.

At the end of your treatment, you will receive instructions on care. Maintaining good oral hygiene, a proper diet and regular dental visits will help extend the life of your new inlay.
