Porcelain Onlays - Highland Kitchener Dentist

An onlay restoration is a custom-made filling crafted from composite material, gold, or tooth-coloured porcelain. Porcelain onlays are particularly favoured for their natural tooth resemblance. Sometimes referred to as a partial crown, onlays are fabricated by a professional dental laboratory and are permanently affixed to the tooth by your dentist.

Onlays serve as a conservative solution for repairing teeth with large, defective fillings or those compromised by decay or trauma. They are a preferable alternative to crowns because they require the removal of less tooth structure. Onlays are similar to inlays, except they also include restoration of one or more of the chewing cusps.

While onlays are highly durable and can last many years, enhancing your smile, they are not permanent and may need to be replaced eventually.

Reasons for Onlay Restorations:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.

What does getting an onlay involve?

Typically, the onlay procedure requires two appointments. The first appointment involves taking several precise impressions (molds) that will be used to create your custom onlay and a temporary restoration.

During this visit, while the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and old filling material. The area is then thoroughly cleaned and shaped to perfectly fit the onlay. A temporary filling is applied to protect the tooth while your custom onlay is prepared by the dental laboratory.

At the second appointment, your new onlay will be carefully cemented into place. Adjustments may be needed to ensure the onlay fits properly and your bite is comfortable.

After the procedure, you will receive instructions on care. Maintaining good oral hygiene, a proper diet and regular dental visits will help extend the life of your new onlay.
