Inlay Restorations - Highland Kitchener Dentist

An inlay restoration is a bespoke filling crafted from composite material, gold, or tooth-coloured porcelain. Created by a professional dental laboratory, it is permanently cemented into the tooth by your dentist.

Inlays are designed to conservatively repair teeth that have either large defective fillings or have sustained damage due to decay or trauma. They present an excellent alternative to traditional silver and composite fillings and are more conservative than crowns because they require the removal of less tooth structure.

Like most dental restorations, inlays are not permanent and may eventually need to be replaced. However, they are highly durable and can last many years, contributing to a beautifully long-lasting smile.

Reasons for Inlay Restorations:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.

What Does Getting an Inlay Involve?

Getting an inlay typically requires two visits to the dentist. The first appointment involves taking several precise impressions (molds) that will be used to create your custom inlay and a temporary restoration.

While your tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and old filling materials. The space will then be meticulously cleaned and prepared, shaping the surface to perfectly fit the inlay. A temporary filling will be applied to protect the tooth while the inlay is fabricated by the dental laboratory.

At your second visit, the new inlay will be carefully and precisely cemented into place. Some adjustments might be necessary to ensure the inlay fits properly and your bite is comfortable.

At the end of your treatment, you will receive instructions for care. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, adhering to a proper diet, and regular dental visits will help extend the life of your new inlay.
